Documentation

  • You must be 18 or over to drive a private vehicle

  • Driving licences (Photocard) issued in EU and EEA countries are accepted

Rules of the Road

Driving & Overtaking

  • Drive on the right and overtake on the left

  • Indicators must be used to overtake or change lanes

  • Use dipped headlights at all times

Priority

  • Where no signs are used vehicles must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, otherwise obey road signs

  • Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, army vehicles, etc.) have priority over other road users when using flashing lights and a siren

  • Vehicles on rails have priority even if approaching from the left

Warning of Approach

  • The use of the horn is only allowed in case of emergency, in order to avoid an accident.

  • The use of the horn is prohibited in Vienna and near hospitals

Driving Penalties

  • The police can issue on the spot fines up to 90 but must issue you an official receipt.

  • If a higher fine is required you may have to pay a deposit and then pay the remainder within two weeks

Identifying Speed Camera Locations

  • No Restrictions

Parking Regulations

  • No vehicle may be parked so as to cause an obstruction and the driver must not leave the vehicle before he has done everything to prevent accidents

Parking Fines Enforcement

  • Parked vehicles obstructing traffic may be towed away

Traffic Lights

  • A flashing green light indicates the approach of the end of the green phase; vehicles close to the traffic lights should proceed.  Those which are still some distance away should prepare to stop.

  • An orange light combined with the red light means that the green phase is imminent

Drink & Drugs

  • The legal limit is 0.49%

  • Anybody suspecting of drink/drug driving will be breathalysed

  • Anybody testing positive will be examined by a police physician

  • A blood test will be taken if serious injury or a fatality is caused

Road Conditions & Tolls

  • The roads are generally in excellent condition

  • A “vignette” must be purchased to use the motorways and express roads

     

Fuel

  • Most petrol stations are open from 0800 – 2000

  • Credit Cards are accepted

Emergencies

  • In case of breakdown or accident, drivers must use a warning triangle or hazard lights and stay close to the vehicle
