Overall European Motorcycle Requirements

Documentation

  • Proof of ID (Passport)

  • Full, valid driving licence* (Both Parts) 

  • Proof of Insurance (third party or above)

  • Insurance Green Card

  • Proof of ownership (V5C Certificate)

  • IDP – International Driving Permit

These seems to be the general rules that we need to apply to. If we follow this then we are covered for all the countries.

Personal & Vehicle Requirements

Equipment

  • Helmet

  • GB Sticker

  • Headlamp beam deflectors

  • First aid kit.

  • Reflective jacket

  • Spare Bulbs

Driving License

  • You must be 18 or over to drive a private vehicle

  • Driving licences (Photocard) issued in EU and EEA countries are accepted

Rules of the Road

Driving & Overtaking

  • Drive on the right and overtake on the left

  • Overtake trams on right unless not enough space

  • Use dipped headlights at all time

Priority

  • Where no signs are used vehicles must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, otherwise obey road signs

  • Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, army vehicles, etc.) have priority over other road users when using flashing lights and a siren

Warning of Approach

  • The use of the horn is only allowed in case of emergency, in order to avoid an accident,

  • At night flash your lights instead

Speed Limits

Driving Penalties

  • The police may issue fines "on the spot"

  • For serious incidents the police are allowed to confiscate vehicles of foreign motorists

Identifying Speed Camera Locations

  • Make sure SAT NAV does not search for or show Speed Camera Locations 

Parking Regulations

  • Parking is prohibited where it may obstruct other vehicles

  • Parking is only allowed on the right hand side of the road

  • In one way streets parking is allowed on the left also

Parking Fines Enforcement

  • Parking fines

  • Vehicles causing obstruction will be towed away

Traffic Lights

  • The international three colour system is generally used but there are some strange rules also

Drink & Drugs

  • The legal limit in quite a lot of places is 0.00%

  • Only drink when we have a day off “Tomorrow”

Road Conditions & Tolls

  • The roads are generally in Good condition

  • See Tolls

Fuel

  • Most petrol stations are not 24 hours like the Uk. They mostly open from 0800 – 2000 so make sure we fill up as we get to our daily destination

  • Credit Cards are accepted in most places

Emergencies

  • In case of breakdown or accident, drivers must use a warning triangle or hazard lights and stay close to the vehicle

  • Probably best to call the police and inform them of any accidents, then have them give us the all clear to leave
