Driving License

  • You must be 18 or over to drive a private vehicle

  • Driving licences (Photocard) issued in EU and EEA countries are accepted

Driving & Overtaking

  • Drive on the right and overtake on the left

Priority

  • Priority belongs to vehicles travelling on the main road as indicated by road signs

  • Trams have right of way over other road users regardless of coming from the right or left. 

Warning of Approach

  • It is prohibited to use the horn in built up areas between the hours of 2200 - 0600

  • If outside of above then only use the horn if absolutely necessary

  • The horn may be used outside built up areas to avoid accidents

Driving Penalties

  • The police can issue on the spot fines but must issue you an official receipt.

Identifying Speed Camera Locations

  • A car navigation system with maps indicating the location of fixed speed cameras is permitted, but equipment which actively searches for speed cameras or interferes with police equipment is prohibited.

Parking Regulations

  • Parking is prohibited where it may obstruct other vehicles

  • In one way streets parking is only on the left

Parking Fines Enforcement

  • Parking fines are from 200 BGN to 2000 BGN

  • Wheel clamps can be used with a release fee of 30 BGN

  • Vehicles causing obstruction will be towed away and incur a fine of 60 BGN

Traffic Lights

  • The international three colour system is used

Drink & Drugs

  • The legal limit is 0.05%

  • Random breath tests are conducted

  • If positive the rider will undergo a blood test

     

Road Conditions & Tolls

  • The roads are generally in poor condition

  • A “vignette” must be purchased to use the motorways and express roads

     

Fuel

  • Most petrol stations are open from 0600 – 2130

  • Credit Cards are accepted

  • Do not use RED pumps (Service Vehicles only)

Emergencies

  • In case of breakdown or accident, drivers must use a warning triangle or hazard lights and stay close to the vehicle
