Motorcyclists: Motorcyclists riding in Belgium, including foreigners, must wear protective clothing, i.e.: gloves, jacket with long sleeves, trousers with long legs or overall, and boots protecting the ankles.

Rules of the Road
Driving & Overtaking

Drive on the right and overtake on the left
-
When overtaking a cyclist or moped rider there should be at least 1m between them and the overtaking vehicle
-
When the size of the carriageway makes passing difficult, the driver may use the side of the footway, provided that pedestrians are not put in any danger
Priority
-
Where no signs are used vehicles must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, otherwise obey road signs
-
Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, army vehicles, etc.) have priority over other road users when using flashing lights and a siren
-
Vehicles on rails have priority even if approaching from the left
-
In built up areas, drivers must slow down or stop for Busses that have indicated they are about to pull away
Warning of Approach

The use of the horn is only allowed in case of emergency, in order to avoid an accident.
Driving Penalties

The police can issue on the spot fines up to 90 Euro but must issue you an official receipt.

If a higher fine is required you may have to pay a deposit and then pay the remainder within two weeks
Identifying Speed Camera Locations

A car navigation system with maps indicating the location of fixed speed cameras is permitted, but equipment which actively searches for speed cameras or interferes with police equipment is prohibited
Parking Regulations

Any Vehicle standing must have its engine swtiched off, unless absolutely necessary.

Park only on the right hand side of the road
Parking Fines Enforcement

Wheel clamps are only used on vehicles with no insurance

Wheel clamps are used on illegally parked coaches in Vienna
Traffic Lights

The International three colour system is used

Green, amber and red arrows are used at some intersections
Drink & Drugs

The legal limit is 0.05%

Anybody suspecting of drink/drug driving will be breathalysed

Anybody testing positive will be examined by a police physician

A blood test will be taken if serious injury or a fatality is caused

The roads surfaces can be very bumpy
