Documentation

  • You must be 18 or over to drive a private vehicle

  • Driving licences (Photocard) issued in EU and EEA countries are accepted

Rules of the Road

Driving & Overtaking

  • Drive on the right and overtake on the left

  • Use dipped headlights at all times

Priority

  • Where no signs are used vehicles must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, otherwise obey road signs

  • Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, army vehicles, etc.) have priority over other road users when using flashing lights and a siren

  • Vehicles on rails have priority even if approaching from the left

  • On mountain roads you have priority if going uphill

Warning of Approach

  • The use of the horn is only allowed in case of emergency, in order to avoid an accident.

Driving Penalties

  • The police can issue on the spot fines up to 90 Euro but must issue you an official receipt.

  • If a higher fine is required you may have to pay a deposit and then pay the remainder within two weeks

Identifying Speed Camera Locations

  • No Restrictions

Parking Regulations

  • No vehicle may be parked so as to cause an obstruction and the driver must not leave the vehicle before he has done everything to prevent accidents

  • Parking fines are issued

Traffic Lights

  • The International three colour system is used

Drink & Drugs

  • The legal limit is 0.3%

  • Anybody suspecting of drink/drug driving will be breathalysed

Road Conditions & Tolls

  • The roads are generally in good condition

  • Never go off-road in rural areas as there is a high risk of LANDMINES

  • There are no Toll roads

     

Fuel

  • Most petrol stations are open from 0800 – 2000

  • Credit Cards are accepted

Emergencies

  • In case of breakdown or accident, drivers must use a warning triangle or hazard lights and stay close to the vehicle

  • You must wait for the police if you are involved in an accident
